Artist Statement 2017

My work uses the forms of film, video, and live televisual performance to investigate the mechanics of human relationships and communication. I am inspired by extremes in vision and connection, from the telepathic to the solipsistic. The purpose of my work is to embody the struggle to know other people using elements of cinematic form. My subject matter has included the surreality of life in man-made landscapes, psychological studies about the mechanisms and limits of empathy, and particular phenomena in cinema, such as the suspension of disbelief, that create moments of conspiracy between authors, subjects, and viewers. I’m interested in cinema’s ability to portray different kinds of time—“realtime”, liveness, geologic, and simultaneity, to name a few—and have used tools ranging from super-slow-motion 16mm film cameras, used for ballistic research, to live broadcasts on the internet to explore these interests.
